Frequently asked questions.

What is counseling?
Counseling is a collaborative effort between the counselor and client. Counselors/Therapists help clients (a) identify goals and potential solutions to problems which cause emotional turmoil; (b) seek to improve communication and coping skills; (c) strengthen self-esteem; and (d) promote positive behavior change and optimal mental health.

How long does counseling take?
There is no simple answer to this question. Sometimes clients find the answer, resolution or level of understanding of an issue in as little as one session. For others, the issue is deeper rooted, and counseling can last for months or years.

What happens if I can’t make an appointment?
If you cannot make an appointment, please let your therapist know as soon as possible. We do have a cancellation fee policy if your appointment is not cancelled outside of your 24-hour appointment window.

How do I know if I should seek counseling?
The complexities of life involving relationships, careers, parenting, self-care and even personal growth can be overwhelming. Counseling can often be the catalyst that helps you to answer your own questions about your life. There are many signs that are indicators that counseling might help:

• Feeling unhappy for no reason
• Not being satisfied with your life
• Having trouble making decisions
• Having trouble setting or reaching goals
• Being tired for no reason
• Feeling hopeless or worried
• Changes in sleeping and/or eating habits
• Acting in ways that you don’t like
• Acting in ways that get you in trouble
• Problems with alcohol or drugs
• Relationship problems
• Having issues at work
• Thinking about death or any kind of self-harm

We offer a 30 minute free consultation phone call for you to ask questions and discuss if one of our therapists are a good fit for you. Is Teletherapy an option?
Yes, ICC can provide tele therapy mental health services.  When requesting an appointment, you can request in office or teletherapy as an option.

What does “in-network” mean? How do I find an in-network provider?
When a doctor, hospital or clinic has a contract with an insurance provider and is included in the provider network connected to your health plan, they are known as being “in network”. When you use an in-network provider, you will receive medical services at the best possible price. Your insurance provider may be able to provide you with a list of in-network doctors, hospitals or clinics.

What is a deductible?
The deductible is the amount you will pay for covered health care services before your insurance plan starts to pay. With a $2,000 deductible, for example, you will pay the first $2,000 of covered services. After you pay your $2000 deductible, you usually pay only a copayment or coinsurance for covered services.

What is a copay?
A copay, or copayment, is a fixed amount paid by you to your health care provider at the time of your appointment for services covered by your insurance policy.

What is an EOB or explanation of benefits?
An Explanation of Benefits, or EOB, is sent to you after you’ve received medical care. It’s important to know that the EOB is not a bill. It will list:
• Services you received
• Total amount billed by the provider
• Health insurance payments made to date
• Costs that you are responsible to pay

I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?
Not at all. People who ask for help know when they need it and have the courage to reach out. Everyone needs help now and then. In our work together, we’ll help you explore and identify your strengths and how to implement them to reduce the influence of the problems you are facing.

What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?
The difference is between someone who can do something, and someone who has the training and experience to do that same thing professionally. A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, counseling is completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing my business.” Lastly, if your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotion, and you’ve been confiding in a friend or family member, there is the risk that once you are feeling better you could start avoiding that person so you aren’t reminded of this difficult time in your life.

Why shouldn’t I just take medication?
Medication can be effective but it alone cannot solve all issues. Sometimes medication is needed in conjunction with counseling. Our work together is designed to explore and unpack the problems you are experiencing and expand on your strengths that can help you accomplish your personal goals.

How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?Because each person has different issues and goals for counseling, it will be different depending on the individual. We tailor our therapeutic approach to your specific needs.

I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?
